Originally I was going to title this ‘Two Minutes at a Time: How to Relieve Stress in the Shower’ thankfully there are more mature people than me editing this website. This article provides a how-to guide on feeling a little bit better every day. A technique that is simple to do and free to use. Yet for all its ease and accessibility, this idea has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, boost your confidence, and produce better social interaction outcomes. To good to be true? nope. Here’s how you do it: Stand like a super hero. Really. That’s all you have to do. Adopt the classic super hero pose; stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, place your fists on your hips, move your shoulders back and elevate your chin a bit. Hold for two minutes. That’s it. Really.
Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist who has been studying body language, has been looking at ‘Power Poses’. She found that our body language not only affects how others react, respond and interact with us, but also how our own body language can effect our blood chemistry. Standing like a super hero lowers the levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) in our blood and increase levels of testosterone (which elevates confidence). Her study also showed the opposite to be true, a ‘defeated posture’ had the inverse effect on these hormones raising the cortisol and lowering testosterone.
So, the take away for today, take two minutes and stand like super hero. You’ll feel less stressed and more confident. Really.
I recommend watching Amy Cuddy’s TED talk.
